New world. Now what?

Yeah, your first night out in the magical, seemingly infinite world of minecraft won't be so straight forward as you might immediately think. This page will try to explain what should be your first steps in a typical minecraft world. How exciting! this page is a Codier challenge, the advice given is not fully verified.

First off, you should be weary of your surroundings: Minecraft is filled with potential threats like mobs, lava pits, huge ravines, all things that could ruin your fun immediately. Once you've made sure that your environment is safe, Try to find some materials! The first material you should be looking for is wood, it's the core of all minecraft crafting recipes (something that we will get back to soon, no worries) and will allow you to branch out to more complex and rare materials. Once you've gotten some wood from trees (like the one in the image, all you need to do is punch!) go and dig up some dirt as well: it's a great block for quick or temporary buildings.

Consider building a small hut that can be used as a house or as a place to be repaired from potential enemies during nightfall. Once you feel repaired enough you can start to look into crafting: for the moment, you only need to know that inside your survival menu there is a crafting space and by placing certain items in these spaces you can create other items! for example, by placing a wood log you will get 4 wood planks; if you distribute these planks in the crafting space you will get a very important item: the crafting table. But what is that for? This new crafting table, when placed, will give you the ability to use up to 9 slots for a single crafting recipe. Let's dive into it!

The Crafting Table

A crafting table is a utility block that gives access to all crafting recipes, including many not available from the inventory's crafting grid.

Pressing use on a crafting table opens the 3×3 crafting grid that allows the player to craft many more items than are available with the crafting grid in the inventory, which is only 2×2.The recipe book is available to the left of the crafting grid (collapsed by default in Java Edition, expanded by default in Bedrock Edition), which stores crafting recipes for reference and one-click crafting. Sticks are a constant element in the recipe of every pickaxe in the game. They act as the handle of the pickaxe, while the other material acts as its head. You can make sticks by placing two planks next to each other vertically in the crafting area.

The first item we need to make is a wooden pickaxe, and its only purpose is to allow us to mine stones. To make a wooden pickaxe, you have to place a plank in each cell of the first row of the crafting area. Then, place 2 wooden sticks in the middle cell of the second and third rows. When the wooden pickaxe is ready, go around the world and look for the stone block. Fortunately, it’s one of the most common blocks in the overworld. After finding and mining it, you will get cobblestone. We need three cobblestone blocks for our next step.

Once you have enough cobblestone, go back to the crafting table. Here, you first need to place a cobblestone block in each cell of the topmost row of the crafting area. Then, put a wooden stick in the middle cells of the other two rows. The placement of sticks remains the same in the crafting recipes of all pickaxes. swords are crafter in a similiar manner, needing a stick at the bottom and two blocks over it. Now that you have some tools, you should get a bed!

Making a Bed

A bed is a block that allows a player to sleep and to reset their spawn point to within a few blocks of the bed in the Overworld. If the bed is obstructed or removed, the player spawns at the default world spawning location.

You need to get your hands on the following items to make a bed in Minecraft: Three Wool Blocks (of the same color), Three Wooden Planks (any) and a Crafting Table. To obtain wooden planks, you have to put a wood/log block in the crafting area. They are one of the easiest blocks to make in the game. You can use any type of wooden plank to craft a bed in Minecraft. They don’t even have to be of the same type of wood. Meanwhile, getting wool is an entirely different story.

First, roam around the world until you find a sheep. They generally spawn in a group of 3-4 mobs. Then, kill the sheep until you have 3 blocks of the same type of wool to make a bed. Each sheep drops 1 wool block on dying. Once you have all the ingredients, it’s easy to craft a bed in Minecraft. Follow these steps to make a bed for yourself in-game: First, place three wooden planks in the second or bottom row of the crafting area. It doesn’t matter which type of wooden planks you use as the type isn’t reflected in the final design. Then, place the wool blocks right above the wooden planks, completely filling the row. These wool blocks have to be the same color otherwise the recipe won’t work. Moreover, the color of the mattress on the bed will be determined by the wool’s color. The most common purpose of the beds in Minecraft is sleeping. You can use the bed to sleep during thunderstorms and at night. Moreover, if you don’t sleep for multiple days, the game spawns a hostile mob called Phantom to hunt you down.

once you have some wood, some tools and a bed you are ready to venture into Minecraft's world for the first time! you will learn many things and mess up others, but do now worry: you can always respawn ;)
